The SSI Group "Slam Dunks" $1,083 in Contributions at HIMSS for New Orleans Common Ground Clinic
Mobile, Alabama, March 6, 2007 - With $1,083 raised at its booth, The SSI Group (SSI) made a "slam dunk" for free healthcare provider Common Ground Clinic last week at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society's (HIMSS) annual Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans.
SSI, a healthcare electronic data interchange (EDI) company, had a basketball goal in its exhibit booth and donated $1 to the Common Ground Clinic for every basket made by attendees. The Common Ground Clinic was also being sponsored by HIMSS during the Conference.
"Our initial goal was to raise at least $500 for the Common Ground Clinic," said Ray Payne, SSI's vice president of Marketing. "Instead, we raised $1,000 through conference attendees participating in the basketball event. We also collected $83 in cash that some attendees contributed in addition to shooting baskets. These funds will go a long way toward helping the mission of the Common Ground Clinic in providing quality healthcare services to the residents of New Orleans."
HIMSS aligned with this free clinic in the Algiers section of New Orleans to help provide needed supplies and technology during the 2007 Annual HIMSS Conference and Exhibition. The main clinic is in the Algiers neighborhood, located on the West Bank of New Orleans. The clinic also operates a Latino Outreach Health Project (LHOP) that goes out several days a week to provide services to Hispanic laborers and residents and occasional mobile clinics. The clinic also provides weekly, confidential HIV testing in partnership with the New Orleans Dept. of Health.
Since opening on September 9, 2005, the Common Ground Clinic sees an average of about 200 patients each week and has had more than 20,000 patient visits. Most of the patients do not have health insurance. The clinic's staff has been working to make this a professional and effective primary care clinic, offering free treatment along with free supplies like vitamins, baby food, and health and hygiene goods. More information on the clinic can be found on the Web at www.cghc.org.
