Hyland Selected as Chair of SharpWorkGroup, Leads Efforts Beyond HIPAA
Mobile, Alabama, February 26, 2007 - Mary Rita Hyland, assistant vice president of Regulatory Affairs for The SSI Group, Inc. (SSI), a healthcare electronic data interchange (EDI) company, has recently been named chair of the SharpWorkGroup (Southern Healthcare Administrative Regional Process).
SharpWorkGroup is an all-volunteer workgroup established to provide a collaborative provider focus on national and regional healthcare initiatives and further the development and implementation of future standards. Its efforts are focused on assisting providers in the states of Arkansas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. The group’s original mission was to encourage dialog among regional healthcare implementers of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act’s (HIPAA) standards and procedures, increasing HIPAA awareness in the provider community.
"For over five years Mary has been instrumental in the development and leadership of SharpWorkGroup," said Walt Culbertson, founding chair of SharpWorkGroup and president and CEO of HealthTransactions. "Based on her successful and dedicated efforts within the organization and her standing as a recognized industry leader within the healthcare community, Mary was asked to assume the role as the new chair. I am pleased that someone of Mary's capability and talent would agree to step to the forefront of the organization."
Hyland has more than 30 years of healthcare experience and has been with SSI for five years. She is also involved with a number of other organizations such as Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange (WEDI) and is on the Board for the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society's (HIMSS) Association for Electronic Health Care Transactions (AFEHCT) organization. In addition, Hyland is a noted speaker at many healthcare IT industry and regulatory events.
The SharpWorkGroup is at a pivotal point in its history, according to Culbertson. "Sharp was initially formed to address HIPAA compliance," he said. "It also had a mission and focus on providing free provider education and the necessary outreach to assist physician efforts to understand and comply with the HIPAA standards. With Mary's continued leadership and guidance, the SharpWorkGroup will continue in many important endeavors to help educate and support our healthcare community."
